Last year, I was commissioned to copy edit a book for the University of Oslo which is now published by Open Book Publishers (and can be accessed for free on their website). Here's a sneak peek of Historicizing IQ Testing: Intelligence Assessments and their Role in Norwegian Society from the 1900s to the Present. 📖 Huge thanks to Håkon Caspersen for trusting me with this project! It was interesting to go back to academia for a while, and especially so for a book on psychology (the subject of my own MA dissertation in dialogue with anthropology) and history (my current area of work). In the last few meets of the Slow Genealogy Society, I've been researching my 5x great-grandfather, William Coates Blaquiere. In February 2020, I visited his grave in Calcutta's Lower Circular Road Cemetery, and it is quite a monument, signifying his status. It also features one of the longest epitaphs I've seen, detailing a lot of his life story, achievements and even mentioning a famous friend – but not a single one of his horde of children. It says he was "a kind friend" to the "Natives of India" by whom "he was generally and [?] beloved", which I'm sure is not at all biased. From what I've found so far, though, I'm very intrigued. He was buried in 1853, at the incredible age of 94. "With our cow who gives her first calf in May." My great-aunt Marina with her daughters and anonymous cow in Assam. 🐄 I haven't talked about this here as much as I do on my other account, but I have pretty strong anti-AI views. We've now created a culture of suspicion, as was inevitable, so I want to make this clear: in working with me, you are guaranteed AI-free writing and editing. I have never used and won't ever use generative AI during any step of my brainstorming, analysing, writing or editing processes. (I actually don't use it at all, yes, I know, the horror.) To me, writing includes thinking; it's not just the final words on the page. People are at the centre of what I do and why I do it. If you choose to work with me, you'll be paying for my time, heartfelt effort, and years of experience. You'll get a collaborator with feelings, and work of much higher quality 😉 I know this won't matter to everyone, but I think your story and legacy deserve it.
