Writing for you

I love telling stories. I love helping people put more stories out into the world. If you trust me with your life story, family history or writing project, I promise to take good care of it. We can work collaboratively, or I can do the heavy lifting for you.

Types of writing you can commission me for:

  • Family history or life story books
  • Artist monographs or bios, especially if you explore themes such as memory, identity, community etc.
  • Website copywriting for storytellers and legacy keepers
  • Well-researched blog posts or feature articles on aligned topics

Editing and Proofreading

Sometimes you need a fresh pair of eyes on your work. My aim is to amplify your words through suggestions that enhance your writing and make it more impactful. A graceful transformation.

I have more than a decade of experience editing diverse publications and projects, and I’m familiar with both US and UK spellings and styles. I believe in sensitive, constructive editing, not complete rewrites that you don’t recognise as your own words.

I offer three types of editing (click on each type to expand):

Developmental edit

Ideal for a first draft. I’ll include suggestions to make your writing more effective, improve the flow, develop the story or theme, point out gaps that need to be explained, and improve tone and intention.

Copy edit

For a structurally sound piece of writing that you want to run by an editor to ensure readability, accuracy, consistency, grammar, semantics, style and fact checking.

Proofread

Only one round of basic grammar, spelling, typographical and punctuation checks. 

Pricing by the word for one round of edits, depending on the type of edit required (developmental edit, copy edit or proofread). Payment plans available for books and longer projects.

Mentoring for writers

Writing can be isolating. We’ve all had moments when we’re hesitant about something we’ve written, or unsure about where it’s going. That’s where I come in. Through one or more tailored (and fun) 1:1 audio/video chats, we can brainstorm:

  • How to get started with your memoir or family history book
  • How to find the main theme or focus of your book
  • Structuring your story or family history
  • Exploring your characters and their story arcs
  • Tightening your writing to make it more compelling and impactful
  • Anything else you need support with

The calls are designed in part as an informal chat so that you can share freely, supported by actionable tips and strategies that will help you take that next step, no matter what it is.

Transcription

Do you have a bunch of records filed away? A pile of journals collecting dust? A stack of handwritten letters? Hours of audio or video interviews? I got you!

I’ve transcribed letters with challenging penmanship, volumes of travel and adventure diaries, 18th century church records, negative copies of land records, family history cassette tapes, and German texts written in Fraktur for my clients. I’d love to help you decipher your mystery. Nothing like a good challenge!

Pricing depends on the clarity of handwriting or audio quality and will be quoted per page or per audio minute.
